  Abstract
A novel compound, 1-octylammonium malate (abbreviated as C8H17NH3C4H5O5 (s)) was synthesized by the method of liquid phase synthesis. Elemental analysis and X-ray single crystal diffraction techniques were applied to characterize its composition and structure. Lattice potential energy was derived from the crystal data of the title compound. According to Pitzer's electrolyte solution theory, the molar enthalpy of dissolution of C8H17NH3C4H5O5(s) at infinite dilution and Pitzer's parameters were obtained. Then the values of apparent relative molar enthalpy and relative partial molar enthalpies of solvent and solute were calculated, respectively.
