  Abstract
Developments in protein chemistry, proteomics and functional genomics induced the demand for sensitive and selective tools for the analysis of proteins and peptides. Capillary electrophoresis (CE) with various modes and versatile detection conjugates, including mass spectrometry (MS), presents a potential method for this purpose. The review mainly summarized some novel CE techniques, including separation strategies, capillary coating, 2D CE and microfluidic CE system, and main application aspects, such as protein separation, determination and peptide sequencing in proteomics, sample enrichment and online proteolysis. It can be concluded that CE is a potential technology for the separation and analysis of proteins and peptides.
