  Abstract
A simple, sensitive, precise, reproducible and rapid analytical method has been proposed for indirect spectrophotometric determination of bismuth through measurement of permittance of the [Fe(III)-EDTA]-1 absorbing system. The solution of Bi+3 buffered by chloroacetic acid was treated with measured and excess of EDTA and surplus EDTA was used for formation of [Fe(III)-EDTA]-1 system. Permittance measured in spectral region 350 to 450 nm, was observed proportional to concentration of bismuth. Average values of the permittance coefficient were determined at different wavelengths for quantitation of bismuth in the range of 1.0 mg to 20.0 mg. Feasibility of this method was further tested for determination of bismuth in the pharmaceutical sample and synthetic mixture. Average accuracy was found to be good, which was evaluated by comparison of results obtained with those claimed by the manufacturers. The metals such as aluminum, barium, calcium, cadmium, chromium, cobalt, copper, iron, lead, magnesium, nickel, and zinc does not interfere.
