Abstract |
|
|
Hemorrhagic cystitis is a challenging problem which is dealt by the urologist but surgeons or residents who are working in the surgical emergency setting are often the first ones to face such patients with ongoing hematuria. Hemorrhagic cystitis is caused probably due to damage to the bladder transitional epithelium and blood vessels by toxins, viruses, radiation, drugs, or disease. The first step should be conservative management but in refractory cases surgical intervention might be required. This review aims at elucidating the etiology of hemorrhagic cystitis and discusses the various management strategies and novel therapeutic approaches available for the treatment of hemorrhagic cystitis.
