  Abstract
The development of high performance electrode materials is one of the main hot spot issue in the field of the fuel cells. As platinum is a precious metal at the anode or cathode side, most of the recent efforts have focused on decreasing platinum utilization via increasing the catalytic efficiency of platinum-based catalysts by preparing different platinum-based nanostructured materials. Improved platinum-based catalysts would have a dramatic impact on the fuel cell efficiency. This review discusses the recent progress in the development of structure, composition and electrocatalytic properties of platinum-based catalysts by focusing on the development of alloy series, core-shell series and controlled shapes series catalysts, respectively.
