  Abstract
Genetically modified (GM) rice since its development in China suffered lot of controversial aspects, which came to an affirmative end with the issuance of bio-safety license to the two GM rice cultivars in China. GM rice was actually developed for the efficient control of lepidopteran pests, but was also thought to cause exposure to some non-target insects. From this review it is clear that no impacts on predators and parasitoids were found, some predators were found to be exposed by Bt toxin but no hazard was caused to them by Bt toxin from any rice cultivar. Bt rice was also tested for its quality assurance and its impact on soil biota, but it was safer for them. The problem of out-crossing with other crops was also tested but except at minor level with wild rice there was no evidence of such case. The resistance development concern in the target insects for Bt rice has already been solved by developing lines expressing two or more pyramid Bt toxins. As far as non-target impacts of Bt rice under laboratory and field conditions is concerned, it could be accomplished that it can be an IPM strategy of transgenic rice against insects thus lowering the attack of non-target insects in the field. Although China has developed its sophisticated and renowned comprehensive regulatory work to deal with the controversial aspects causing obstacle in approving the Bt rice lines for commercialization but still there are some concerns which are under process and need more research to solve these problems. So it can be ascertained that if Bt rice can result into better yield and reducing the pesticides spray in the field, it can be more better than other conventional cultivars as being more safer to environment due to the reduction of insecticide use.
