  Abstract
Bioremediation of toxic and radioactive extracellular compounds and microbial electricity production are based on optimized electron transfer chains that assure an efficient electron delivery to cell exterior. Periplasmic triheme cytochromes, designated cytochromes c7, have been shown to be enrolled in such transfer. In the last years, much information on the structure and electron transfer mechanisms of cytochromes c7 from different origins has been gathered. This review focuses on the structural and functional diversity presented by cytochromes c7 and their biological repercussion.
