Abstract |
|
|
In this paper, a C-band Erbium-doped Fiber Amplifier (EDFA) is designed and characterized using simulation software of GainMasterTM from Fibercore Limited. The simulation software is capable of producing comprehensive EDFA characteristics for analysis, such as signal gain, noise figure, average inversion, optical power spectrum, amplified spontaneous emission, etc. The gain and noise figure performances are simulated and studied with the use of Erbium-doped fiber IsoGainTM I-25 as a gain medium. To verify the software, simulation results are also compared with experimental values. It is found that the simulation results show a very good agreement with the experimental values. Overall, the EDFA simulation software proves to be a useful tool in simulating EDFA characteristics. Two-stage EDFA configuration is also proposed and demonstrated for gain enhancement. It is observed that the two-stage EDFA also improves the signal gain and noise figure by average of 4.0dB and 1.3dB, respectively.
